Even though water is the foundation of all life, a quarter of the worlds population in 2022 is living in a region with an extremely high risk of water scarcity. Those countries use an average of 80% of the available renewable water every year and therefore their reserves are limited. This results in huge pressure on an alternative source such as groundwater. Periods of drought are one of the major consequences caused by the high water demand.
Logically we all want to reduce our ecological footprint, and we try so by taking shorter showers, eating less meat and incorporating water saving techniques. But what if we told you that those efforts are trifling, as long as your favourite cotton T-shirt consumes 900 days worth of drinking water? The fashion industry is a massive consumer of our freshwater.
Studies tell that the production of textiles uses approximately 93 billion cubic meters of water a year, representing 4% of the global freshwater withdrawal. This would be enough to fill 35 million Olympic-size swimming pools. Those amounts of water usage are staggering, especially in this age of low water resources all around the world.
Not only the production of textiles but also the manufacturing in the apparel industry contributes to the water footprint of fashion. To add color to a T-shirt, it goes through a dye bath. The vibrant colors, prints and fabric finishes are achieved with toxic chemicals. Afterwards, the fabric has to be rinsed abundantly with water to remove paint residues. This rinse water, which contains dye pigment and chemicals, goes (in the “best” case scenario) to a purification plant. As the conventional plants, unfortunately, do not succeed in removing the miniscule paint pigments from the wastewater, the rivers near textile factories sometimes turn into green, purple or red streams. The dying of textile is, therefore after agriculture, the second largest polluter of clean water globally.
However, this doesn’t mean that we have to give up our big passion for fashion. By recycling and revaluing our clothing, we can make a huge difference.
